Using Out-of-Network Insurance Benefits
You may have coverage for therapy even if Wise Mind Counseling is not directly in-network with your insurance plan. Many insurance plans include out-of-network behavioral health benefits, which may reimburse a portion of your therapy costs.
The process works as follows:
- Payment: You pay the session fee at the time of your appointment through the secure client portal.
- Superbill: A monthly itemized receipt (superbill) is provided to you with the information needed to submit a claim to your insurance company.
- Reimbursement: You submit the superbill to your insurance company according to your plan’s procedures. Your insurance company processes the claim according to your plan’s out-of-network benefits. Depending on your coverage, the amount may be reimbursed to you, applied toward your out-of-network deductible, or not covered..
You are responsible for verifying your insurance benefits and coverage before beginning therapy. Keep in mind that coverage varies by insurance plan and your insurance company can explain your benefits to you.
Why Choose Private-Pay Therapy
Some clients choose private-pay therapy because they prefer greater control over how they access and finance their mental health care.
Greater privacy: When you use insurance, your insurance company requires a diagnosis to determine coverage and reimbursement. With private pay, no insurance claim is submitted, so your diagnosis is not shared with an insurance company for reimbursement. Clinical documentation and other legally required disclosures still apply.
More flexibility in treatment planning: Insurance companies determine medical necessity and may limit the number of sessions covered. Private-pay treatment allows you and your therapist to make clinical decisions based on your individual needs and goals without seeking insurance approval for continued care.
Private pay can be a good option for people who value timely access to therapy, greater flexibility in treatment planning, prefer not to submit mental health claims to insurance, or are seeking specialized treatment approaches.
